How to do it:

  1. Find an appropriate place to take your rapé, where you might normally meditate.

  2. Ground yourself into the present moment and focus on your intention for this session.

What information are you hoping to receive from the plant medicine? What guidance are you seeking from the spirits of the Forest? Intentions are often for focus, clarity, healing, releasing blockages or emotional turmoil, grounding, unconditional love, wisdom, and more.

  3. Recite your rapé intention as you measure out the amount of rapé you want to consume on the palm of your hand. A Skittle-sized circle is a normal dose, but can go up to the circle size of a nickel, quarter, or more.

  4. Use the end of your kuripe (rapé applicator) that will insert into your nostril, to flatten and smooth out the powder. This will make it very smooth, and easier to split the dose into two, one for each nostril.

  5. Load up the nose (long) end of your rapé applicator with half the amount on your palm. Tap the V end on a hard surface to remove any stuck rapé or air pockets.

It’s also the tradition to scoop the rapé toward your heart.

  6. Take a deep breath first, then place the mouth (short) end of your kuripe into your mouth and fit the nose end snugly into your nostril.

  7. Lean forward a little, close your eyes (so you don’t blow rapé into them) and with a gentle to medium force of breath, blow the rapé into your nostril.

  8. Take a moment to experience the first dosage of rapé. It will include some minor pain, this is normal and allows your busy mind to quiet.

If you feel your body tighten, or face tense up, focus on softening all areas.

Do you need more, do you need less?

  9. When you are ready, only waiting 1-3 breaths, load up the nose end of your kuripe with the rest of the rapé on your palm. Tap the V end on a hard surface to remove any stuck rapé or air pockets.

  10. Take a deep breath through the mouth, place the mouth end of your kuripe into your mouth and fit the nose end snugly into the opposite nostril.

  11. Repeat the same process as the first nostril.

You can move the force of the rapé through your channels with your fingers.

  12. Optionally, place your fingers on your middle fingers on the top of the bridge of your nose, move the energy of the rapé up your forehead and and run all your fingers along the top and sides of your heads.

Brush the energy down the back of your head, along your shoulders and off into the air.

You can snap your fingers to clear any old, stuck or negative energy that is being moved out of your field.

  13. Ground into the present moment and allow your consciousness to connect to Nature, to the healing plants in the medicine you just consumed, and to your intentions.

  14. Once the experience of the rapé has subsided.

  15. Eventually you may feel the need to cough up a phlegm spit. Have a container or cup that you can spit into. You’ll see the brown coming through the phlegm, this is normal.

  16. Your nose may start to run. This is good and normal. You’ll want to blow each nostril clear, so have some tissues at hand.

Note: No reported harmful side affects. It is tobacco based and may cause addiction, although uncommon.

It is 100% legal in the US and can be ordered online.

Why do it:

Rapé is a blend of powdered medicinal herbs that the Indians of the Amazon basin have been consuming through the nose since pre-Columbian times. Sharing rapé, or “passando rapé, takes place in all aspects of Amazonian life, from formal ritual use in rites of puberty, initiation, festivals, to simply hanging out with friends.

Medicinal rapé is traditionally consumed in a ritualistic way. This is because it is believed that the act of sharing rapé connects you with the forces of Nature and allows you to receive the healing and blessings of sacred, medicinal plants. Depending on the specific combination medicinal plants used in the rapé blend, the experience can range from fragrant to intensely stimulating.
